Red Velvet
Red Velvet
Homemade recipe
“It might looks strange to add vinegar, but I promise you that the cake is absolutely delicious!”, this is how one of our overseas guest describes Red Velvet, sending us the recipe passed on by her mother-in-law; so we did it and we fell in love with it! Try you too, it’s worth it and … good things must be shared!!!
INGREDIENTS FOR THE BASE
• ½ cup shortening
• 1 ½ sugar
• 2 eggs
• 2 tablespoon of cocoa
• 2 oz, red food coloring
• pinch of salt
• 1 cup of buttermilk
• 2 ¼ sifted flour
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 teaspoon of vinegar (cider)
• 1 teaspoon of baking soda
DIRECTIONS
Mix shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and coloring, then add paste to creamed mixture; add salt, buttermilk, flour and vanilla. Fold in, by hand, vinegar. Add soda and mix it gently.
Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans. Set oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 30/35 minutes (test with toothpick). Split layers if you wish and fill with White Sauce Icing.
INGREDIENTS FOR WHITE SAUCE ICING
•3 tablespoons of flour
•1 cup of milk
•1 cup of granulated sugar
•1 cup of butter
•1 teaspoon of vanilla
DIRECTIONS
Cook flour and milk until it gets thick, let it cool and then add sugar, butter and vanilla and beat until the mixture becomes fluffy and fill the cake.
